Cowboys sign veteran Rossum in effort to boost return game

The Dallas Cowboys signed return specialist Allen Rossum on Tuesday, a league source told NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

Terms of the deal with Rossum, who was born and raised in Dallas, weren't known. Rossum was released by the 49ers on Monday and immediately drew interest from three teams, according to the source.

Rossum, a 12-year veteran who ranks second in NFL history with 14,987 return yards, should help the Cowboys' special-teams units. Miles Austin has returned kickoffs, but he broke out with a 250-yard, two-touchdown performance Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs and is needed to play a prominent receiver role with Roy Williams injured. Felix Jones also has returned kickoffs, but he's hurt, and Patrick Crayton and Terence Newman both have misplayed punts this season.

Rossum had one of his best seasons in 2008, setting career highs of 26.8 yards per kickoff return and 14.9 per punt return. However, he was inactive in the 49ers' last two games and was cut to make roster room for rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree, who ended his prolonged contract holdout.

"I think teams have to approach our return game differently when I'm on the field," Rossum said Monday. "These last two weeks before every game, they've been shocked that I'm not up. I know I'm doing something good when those teams approach me and say, 'Hey, man, we've been preparing for you all week.' I'm not worried about it."

The Cowboys also released cornerback Cletis Gordon and re-signed running back Chauncey Washington to their practice squad. Rossum, who also plays cornerback, could take Gordon's place.

Cowboys seek consistency as they play host to Falcons

While the Dallas Cowboys had a profitable bye week, they know it's up to them to make it really pay off.

The Atlanta Falcons should provide an excellent example of the kind of improving team they'd like to become.

The Falcons will get their first look at Cowboys Stadium on Sunday against a Dallas squad that has won its two previous games following byes under coach Wade Phillips.

Dallas (3-2) had Week 6 off and watched the other teams in the NFC East all lose. That put the Cowboys into a second-place tie with Philadelphia, 1 1/2 games behind the New York Giants.

"It just shows you that you've got to play well each week," Phillips said. "You can be favored and all those things, but you've got to play well to win ballgames. ... It's tough to win in this league. I've said it all along -- I think winners come through. I think that's the big key, being consistent."

That's something Dallas hasn't been, alternating wins and losses this season. All three of the Cowboys' victories have been against winless teams and they needed overtime in the most recent one, 26-20 at Kansas City on Oct. 11.

One bright spot, though, has been the pass rush gaining steam. They had no sacks in their first two games before recording 10 in the next three.

That could be a major factor against Atlanta (4-1), which hasn't allowed a sack in its last four games after Matt Ryan was dropped twice in its opener.

"Yes, this is our fourth straight week with no sacks," coach Mike Smith said about Sunday's 21-14 home win over Chicago. "Again, that's attributed to our offensive line, quarterback, tight ends, and protection package that our coaching staff has put in."

The Falcons have been efficient in winning their last two games, allowing an average of 91.5 yards rushing. Star receiver Roddy White has gotten untracked with three touchdowns in that span after he had just one in his first three contests.

The Cowboys feel they may have found a No. 1 receiver in Miles Austin, whose first start two weeks ago was a memorable one. Austin had 10 catches for a franchise-record 250 yards and two touchdowns against the Chiefs, including a 60-yard TD in overtime.

"It was Miles' day," receiver Roy Williams said. "Players just come out of the woodwork in this offense. You never know who is going to have a big day."

That group could have a big day against the Falcons, who placed starting cornerback Brian Williams on injured reserve Tuesday with a knee injury. Atlanta is mulling over its options in the secondary.

"We've got some guys we feel are ready to step up into that role and it will be an opportunity for Tye Hill, Chevis Jackson and Chris Owens to get some more playing time," Smith said. "We'll have a different look with our 45-man roster when we get to Dallas this week."

This game has extra meaning for Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking, a Georgia native who played college football at Georgia Tech before he spent his first 11 seasons with the Falcons. Brooking signed with Dallas in the offseason and has been a major addition to Phillips' defense with a team-high 29 solo tackles.

"I'd be lying to you if I was like, 'Ah, I'm not trying to prove to those guys that I can still do it at a high level,'" he said. "But that's not my priority. ... I'm 12 years into my career. That window of opportunity is narrowing every passing day. I know I'm much closer to the end of my career than the beginning. I just want to enjoy these last few years and get the most out of every day and cherish every moment."

The Cowboys have the league's second-rated offense and third-rated rushing attack, but quarterback Tony Romo has only six touchdown passes this year. His counterpart, Ryan, has nine TDs and a better quarterback rating and completion percentage.

"It's time to exert ourselves and get an identity for our team," running back Tashard Choice said. "We need a big push for the second quarter (of the season). We've got to be ready to make a move, to get ourselves on track."

Dallas has won six of the last nine meetings, with Romo throwing for 278 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-28 victory Dec. 16, 2006, in the most recent one.

COWBOYS OFFENSE

PTS 24.4 (11th)
YDS 420.4 (2nd)
PASS YDS 259.4 (9th)
RUSH YDS 161.0 (3rd)

COWBOYS DEFENSE

PTS 19.6 (12th)
YDS 357.8 (22nd)
PASS YDS 251.4 (26th)
RUSH YDS 106.4 (17th)

The Cowboys defense needs a lot of work.

Let's make a deal: Ware settles for $78 million extension with 'Boys

DeMarcus Ware finally has his big contract with the Dallas Cowboys. He just won't be paid as much as some of the elite quarterbacks he'll try to sack. After months of talks that intensified over the past two weeks, the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker agreed Monday to a six-year, $78 million deal that runs through the 2015 season and guarantees him $40 million. I feel like I work really hard and am really deserving of what they've given me," Ware said. "All this is behind me now. It's time to get to work. You know what it's time to bring home. I'm not going to say what it is, we're just going to show you, and I'm going to show you."

Jones called Ware a "cornerstone player" for the Cowboys, who have gone 12 seasons without winning a playoff game and longer than that since winning three Super Bowl championships in four seasons from 1992 to 1995. Ware, who was in the final season of the contract that he signed after being the 11th overall pick in the 2005 draft, has 57.5 sacks while starting all 70 of his regular-season games.

"Going into this negotiation, how do you ask for too much money for DeMarcus Ware given what he's accomplished?" said Ware's agent, Pat Dye. "We were asking for a lot more money than we ended up settling on. ... Ultimately they convinced us they were not going to pay DeMarcus like an elite quarterback, and certainly we understood that."

There were initial talks about a deal after last season, but Dye said contracts signed in August by quarterbacks Eli Manning (six years, $97 million with $35 million guaranteed from the New York Giants) and Philip Rivers (six years, $93 million with $38 million guaranteed from the San Diego Chargers) provided "some kind of ceiling" and narrowed the focus in negotiations. Talks picked up during the Cowboys' bye week, which preceded their 37-21 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday."We're certainly not going to be a team that's going to step up and pay a defensive player like a quarterback," said Stephen Jones, the Cowboys' vice president and the owner's son. "We're not going to do that."

Ware is the fourth player in Cowboys history with three consecutive 10-sack seasons. The last Dallas player with more than Ware in a single season was Hall of Fame defensive tackle Randy White with 16 in 1978. There also was Ware's NFL record-matching streak of 10 consecutive games with a sack (2007-08), the longest in the NFL in 15 years -- though it isn't recognized as a Cowboys record. Harvey Martin had sacks in 11 consecutive games from 1976 to 1977 before the NFL considered sacks an official stat.

Jerry Jones said what Ware has accomplished is far beyond what former coach Bill Parcells, who used to compare the linebacker to Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, expected when he was drafted. Jones said Ware has really exceeded everybody's expectations. "He's a cornerstone player for this franchise and will be for a long time to come," Jones said. "It is something special that he's the type of person that if you're to spend the time that we all spend and the energy that we spend with the Cowboys, this is who you want to hang out with and who you want to be around."

The Cowboys drafted Ware from Troy instead of Shawne Merriman, whom the San Diego Chargers took 12th overall when Dallas coach Wade Phillips was the defensive coordinator for that team. "I've been lucky to be around a lot of good ones. He's at the top of the class, and it doesn't take long to call the roll," Phillips, also the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, said of Ware. "He's an all-around player, and he plays the run well, too. That's what you really like about him.

"I was around Merriman, he had 17 sacks in 12 games. Of course, Reggie White and Bruce Smith were special. (Ware) is special. He's a special guy in that way. He's got all the things it takes, and he utilizes them and he works hard at it. He's only going to get better."

The Dallas Cowboys (6-2) might be the second best team in the NFL slightly behind Minnesota (7-1). I'm not sure about New Orleans (8-0). Indianaplis (8-0) and New England (6-2) are pretty good but I don't see either making it to the Superbowl

The Cowboys had a great run in the 90's. With all the talent the boys have they should have at least one trophy since 2000.
